GCBA Wolverines House League
Welcome back to another season of playing a great Canadian sport... basketball!
The House League program averages 500-600 players each year comprised of both boys’ and girls’ teams from U10 (8-9) to U19 (17-18). Player development is still a priority but the primary focus is fun first! Players need to love the game to keep them playing well beyond their youth.

House League Overview
- The session starts at the end of September with a "sorting" weekend to create balanced teams.
- The season runs from mid-October to early March.
- Each week, there is a 1 hour practice (week night to be determined by coach availability) and a one and 1.5 game time on Saturdays.
- Gyms are located in the east end of Ottawa (east of Blair Road and into Orleans).
FAQs
-
What is the GCBA House League Program?
The House League program concentrates on teaching fundamental basketball skills to players who are new to the sport or players who are interested in playing recreationally.
-
Can anyone try out?
The House League program does not have try outs instead they have a series of skills evaluation sessions in the pre-season (two weeks before Thanksgiving). League games begin the week after Thanksgiving.
-
What is the time commitment for a House League player?
Practices take place on weekdays (Mondays to Fridays) and games take place every Saturday from October to mid March. Practices are 1 hour and games are 1.5 hr. Total House League Commitment 2.5 hr/week.
-
When are the HL practices?
The specific practice day/time/gym cannot be confirmed until AFTER the House League Draft held in early OCT prior to the Thanksgiving weekend. This is when the players will be assigned to their individual teams.
Once assigned to a team, the team practice will be held on the same day, at the same gym, and at the same time every week for the duration of the season.
However, the one exception to this, is notification of unforecast, often last minute, gym cancellations by the school boards that may necessitate the re-assignment of an occasional practice to a similar day/time slot in an alternate location.
The GCBA books practice slots for each day of the week for most divisions, and therefore, we have some flexibility to accommodate the occasional team switch if an unavoidable conflict with a player's schedule arises. However, due to our commitment to balance HL teams within divisions as much as possible, we cannot guarantee that requests for specific practice nights will be honoured in all cases.
However, in order to avoid possible conflicts...we ask that if you know the night(s) the player is NOT available, to please note this on the Registration form Questionnaire that you fill out during the Registration process. This will appear as a roster note on our database and we will take this into consideration when assigning a player to a team.
We take all steps possible to avoid conflict with other commitments.
NOTE: HL Games are on Saturdays at Game Gym assigned to the division. Game times vary from week to week depending on the assigned team's schedule. Practices are during the week. Same day/time/gym each week.
-
How are special requests handled?
The purpose of holding evaluations (and the subsequent draft) is the GCBA's attempt to evenly distribute the skill/size fairly amongst the teams.
True, it is not an exact science and is not without it faults, however, it has been proven to be the best option available to the league and has been relatively successful in the past.
At the evaluations, it is explained to the parents that we will do what we can to accommodate their requests.
During the draft, coaches make every attempt to accommodate carpools, practise night restrictions, etc in their selections. Unfailingly, of course, a week later, every coach is getting requests to move teams, practice nights, etc.
- All requests to move players are denied for the initial two weeks.
Sorry, but players/parents just have to tough it out for a bit. The parents are more than welcome to complain to the convenor and/or the league...but the
answer will still be the same….NO.
If the player can't make it to practice, so be it. There is just too much to get done, during start up, to be making all these special arrangements. We need a little bedding-down period at this point.
Our next step is to have some balancing games in order to really determine which teams are lacking and which teams are top heavy.
Coaches will then get together as a collective (after the first two games) and make the necessary adjustments through a fair and transparent process.
It will be at this time that we will address any other move requests. Coaches are asked to document and keep these requests handy.
-
How long is the season?
House League season runs from OCT-MAR for a maximum of 19 weeks (this includes the pre-season of 1-2 weekends and 15-18 regular season games).
-
What is the commitment required from the players?
House League players must commit to attending all weekday practices [1 hr] and Saturday games [1.5 hr].
-
What is the commitment from parents?
The GCBA is a volunteer organization and every parent of every House League player is expected to commit to a volunteer effort to help the teams run. This commitment need not be more than a few hours on an occasional basis, but it is essential. Volunteer duties include timing, scoring and team assistance.
-
How do you evaluate House League players?
Players are evaluated in the skills session that takes place in the pre-season. An exhibition game is part of the evaluation process.
-
Is there a guarantee of playing time in House League?
YES! All House League players are guaranteed equal playing time during games.
-
Do I have to have basketball experience?
NO. House League players do not need experience playing basketball just a desire to learn, participate and have fun.

Competitive Program Overview
- Our club participates in the EOBL (Eastern Ontario Basketball League) with boys’ and girls’ teams from U10 (8-9) to U19 (17-18).
- We often also enter some teams in the OBL (Ontario Basketball League) - typically at U17 and/or U19. These teams play almost exclusively in and around the Greater Toronto Area so there are additional cost and time commitments involved.
- All competitive players must register as a GCBA member and pay the registration fee. After being selected to a competitive team, additional team fees will be charged to cover competitive registrations, games, and tournaments. The team fees start at approximately $350 and rise from there. OBL team fees are significantly more.
- Financial support can be available through Canadian Tire's Jump Start Program and the GCBA Wolverines Benevolent Fund. Please ask your coach for more information.
- The session starts in early September with tryouts for our EOBL teams. Some OBL teams often have tryouts in August. Players must pre-register online for tryouts and pay a non-refundable tryout fee.
- The season runs from mid-October to early March (or late June, depending on the age group).
- Each week, there are approximately two 1.5 to 2 hour practices (week nights to be determined by coach availability) and plus games scheduled on some evenings and weekends each month.
- Gyms are located in the east end of Ottawa (east of Blair Road and into Orleans).
- All of the teams travel, including an end of season trip to the Ontario Cup (dates/locations vary team by team).
- Questions or Concerns? Please contact us at: g_cbasketball@yahoo.ca
Other FAQs
- What is the Competitive GCBA Wolverines Program?
The Wolverines program concentrates on developing basketball players who are interested in the sport at the competitive level. Teams travel to tournaments across Ontario and play other competitive teams from the Ottawa area.
- Can anyone try out?
Tryouts are open to anyone registered in the GCBA. If you are not a registered member of the GCBA, you will need to register ONLINE.- If you DO NOT make the competitive team you tryout for you will automatically be assigned to a House League Team and the opportunity to tryout for a Selects team for your age group (if there is one available) later in the season.
- If I play high school basketball, do I have time for Wolverines too?
YES!!! The Wolverine program is designed so that there is only one mandatory practice during the high school season for both girls and boys, limiting the amount of tournaments during this time. Most of our players do both!
- It is very difficult to play competitive basketball and another competitive sport?
The Wolverines Basketball program is considered the priority sports commitment for our players. Playing two competitive sports in the same season is very difficult to do and manage where one will focus your limited time.
- What is the commitment from families?
Gloucester Cumberland Basketball is a volunteer organization and family member of every Wolverines player are expected to commit to a volunteer effort to help the teams run. This commitment need not be more than a few hours on an occasional basis, but it is essential. Your Managers (who are also volunteers!) will outline the volunteer jobs during the first team meeting. In addition, the Wolverines host a major tournament every year, and family members are expected to help that weekend.
- What is the tryout process?
Every player is guaranteed two tryouts. Following the second tryout, some players will be released to House League. A third tryout will then take place, after which time teams are announced. All players are phoned by the coach and told of the outcome of their tryout.
- How do you evaluate potential Wolverine players?
All players at all levels are evaluated by a team of approximately 3-4 people. These are the two coaches at the level (where applicable), assistant coaches (IF they are non-parent coaches), former coaches, basketball experts from the community and the coaches from the level immediately above where your son or daughter wants to play. Players are evaluated on a combination of basketball skills appropriate to their level, as well as game situations (assessed through scrimmages). Evaluation forms are used by the evaluators to aid in assessing players to determine strengths and weaknesses.
- Is there a guarantee of playing time in Wolverines?
The Wolverines program is a competitive basketball program. There are playing time rules for the Novice and Atom levels that require equal participation. At all other levels playing time is at the discretion of the coach. However, the GCBA encourages coaches to develop all the players they select to their teams.
- Do I have to have competitive basketball experience?
Not at all! Basic skills, athletic capability, an understanding of the game and desire are all you need to try out.
Capital Courts Boys Program (CCB)
Capital Courts Boys Program (CCB) has entered a partnership with the Gloucester Cumberland Basketball Association to create a pathway to post-secondary opportunities for players entering grade 9 and 10. CCB will compete in U.S. circuits as well tournaments throughout Canada. CCB will adopt the same Integrated Performance Management (IPM) system as the Capital Courts Academy girl’s program. The IPM model creates a customized development plan for each player to enhance development on and off the court.
Tryout Schedule - August 15th, 17th, and 23rd from 6 to 8pm at the Francois Dupuis Recreation Centre (2263 Portobello Blvd., Orleans).

How many players are selected per team?
11-14 players will be selected for each team.

Yes, players who wish to try out will pay a $20 non-refundable tryout fee and are asked to bring their GCBA jersey and their own ball to the tryout. Players must have participated in the majority of their house league games (at least 70%) to be eligible to try out. The tryouts will consist of a number of basketball skill and athletic ability drills as well as short scrimmages. The evaluations will be conducted by current GCBA coaches from both the HL and Competitive programs.
What is the practice schedule?
The Selects teams will practice one time per week until the end of their house league schedule (2nd week of March) – after that there will be two practices per week.
How long is the season?
The Selects season starts in November/December and is completed by the end of April, however Sr boys teams may continue to play through May with the approval of the Director if teams are available to play.

Typical expense items include; tournament fees, referee fees for exhibition games, team clothing and a wind-up party – these items are at the discretion of the team. Lodging and meal costs for out of town tournaments are the responsibility of the player/family. Fundraising activities can include seeking out corporate funding and running canteens and other activities.
What is the cost?
Additional team costs for the season run $300-500 (approx.) per player depending on how many tournaments/exhibition games the team registers for.
Uniforms?
Uniforms are the responsibility of the teams to purchase. Returning players can use their uniform from a previous year provided the numbers do not conflict and the teams are purchasing the same style and colour. The cost of the uniform is tbd.

At the same time, the program gives young people an excellent skill and teaches them more about basketball, the opportunity to learn in a safe environment, the opportunity to see the game from the “other side,” and teaches lessons about interacting with adults and players in a formal situation.
Starting at the age of 12 (grade 7), any child enrolled in the GCBA wishing to learn how to be a referee can apply to the program through the pre-registration forms. All of our referees either have played or currently do play on our House League or Competitive teams.
The GCBA is committed to training and supporting all of our 80-100 active game officials and we provide many clinics throughout the season to help improve the quality of their officiating (referees, timers, scorers) within the organization. We also run a well established and fully developed Junior Referee Program to encourage everyone 12 years and older to get involved in officiating. Not only can youth earn extra money while staying active but they gain valuable skills like poise, judgment, quick decision making and confidence.
New referee candidates are identified during the GCBA Online Registration process by clicking YES in the “Player Information” section regarding Referees. Training Sessions take place in September each year.
Returning referees and new referee candidates are emailed “Referee Training and Registration” packages the first week of September.
Junior referees at the entry level receive 5 hours of classroom instruction from a federated referee and must pass an exam on their instruction before being accepted into the program.
Training in game situations for entry level referees is done through a 4-hour mechanics session, but moves quickly to real games, as this is the best place to learn.
Second year referees also receive the 5 hours of classroom instruction. Those who have been in the program longer are monitored to ensure their skills meet a certain level.
Training then continues on the floor in the following manner:
- First year referees: Training by an experienced House League referee for 3 months, then supervision/training by an experienced referee for the remainder of the season during games.
- Second year referees: Supervision and training as required by an experienced House League referee for the entire season during games.
- Third year and up: Supervision by the Chief Referee on a regular basis to ensure skills are at an acceptable level during games.
What level do I start?
All new candidates and returning referees are assessed according to skill and aptitude from the written exam and practical sessions before the season starts. Most 1st year referees start officiating games at the Novice level (8-9 year olds) accompanied by a trainer throughout the season.
Can I move up in the Program?
YES, but it’s not automatic. All returning referees are reassessed and assigned an age group based on results from the written exam and practical sessions before the season starts. Effort, skill and desire will determine how quickly you advance in the program.
What are the different levels?
Novice (8-9), Atom (10-11), Bantam (12-13), Midget (14-15), Junior (15-16) and Trainer.
Are Referees paid?
Yes, they are on a monthly basis. Pay scale is determined by the level they are assigned to. The older the age group, the higher the pay.
How do I become a trainer?
You must be 18 years of age or older to before being considered a trainer and is based on need and/or by request. Trainers are the “cream of the crop” and must possess excellent technical, teaching and personal skills as well as a strong aptitude for the game. On any given Saturday, our trainers will referee 1.5 to 3 hours of games at the senior levels, then spend 3-5 hours training. Their day often starts at 7 a.m. and does not end until 5 p.m.
I’m interested, how do I get started?
Must register with the GCBA and select YES to wanting to become a referee on the form. Once registered You’ll need to attend the written exam session and practical training sessions as per the Referee Training Schedule on the GCBA website.
Referees are responsible for the following:
- Refereeing games
- Assisting minor officials (volunteer scorekeepers and timers)
- Referees are NOT responsible for:
- Setting up or taking down gyms (although often these responsible young people will assist
- Players or teams
- Finding custodial staff
While there is a strong system in place to evaluate all referees throughout the season, we know mistakes are made and there are situations that need to be addressed.
If you have concerns, please notify your convenor first. The convenor should then email the Chief Referee: referee.gcba@gmail.com as soon as possible.
Basketball is a complex game. Our referees are learning, even after several years.
This program attempts to help the individuals develop a rudimentary level of officiating so that both teams have an equal opportunity to play in a relatively safe environment. However, just as every basketball player plays differently, so too do referees have individual interpretations based on experience and perception.
Some referees call a “close” game in which they will blow the whistle on every infraction they see. Some others make calls based on whether or not a disadvantage is created by an infraction. Given that the calls of the referee may vary, coaches should understand that their challenge is to recognize the nature of the calls and guide or alter the play of the individual player, or the team, to achieve their best results.
More importantly, junior referees are only learning the difficult art of officiating under stressful conditions requiring courage and split-second decision-making. While this does not excuse poor refereeing, it must be remembered that it is not a perfect science – in basketball or in any other sport – and the junior referees are still under development. Please remember, they are human and yes, humans do make mistakes.
Refereeing involves the following skills:
- Knowing - all the rules
- Remembering where to be on the floor - at all times as the play constantly shifts
- Watching - for rule infractions
- Remembering which player(s) - were involved in the rule infraction
- Blowing the whistle - for infractions
- Remembering the proper hand signals - for the infractions
- Having the courage to make their calls - clear with a loud whistle and voice
- Interacting with players - to instruct them about the infraction and helping the learn not to do it again
- Interacting with coaches - on bench behaviour
- Watching the clock
- Keeping track of the number of team fouls - in coordination with minor officials
All this is being done at one time, often by young people between the ages of 12 and 18. It is important to remember that they are learning.
At the same time, our trainers are also learning. They are:
- Watching two referees and their position on the floor
- Watching the play in the game to ensure they are seeing as much as possible, and making sure two referees are seeing it at the same time
- Teaching two referees at once
- Watching the clock
- Interacting with players and coaches and minor officials
This is all part of what makes our program so successful, but also helps us build skills and give young people intangible benefits. It is also important to remember that GCBA Referees are someone’s child. As parent, coaches and assistant coaches, you are expected to treat referees with the same deference as you would a federated referee, and you are expected to treat them at the same level you would anyone of that age.
Trainers are responsible for the following:
- Helping the junior referee understand/recognize their calls
- Coach the junior referees
- Some cases require the trainer to “shadow”** newer referees
- To clarify and explain some rules to referees, players, and sometimes coaches
- Trainers are the ONLY referees capable of calling Illegal Defence (effective at the Novice, Atom exclusively and at Bantam levels when a Trainer is present)
**Shadowing means the trainer will physically go out onto the floor with the referee and direct, or occasionally make a call, to help the trainee recognize situations where calls are appropriate.
Trainers are NOT responsible for:
- Making calls during the game (though they have the right to make some if necessary)
- Keeping track of equal play (player shifts)
A message for Spectators and how you can HELP the GCBA Junior Referee Program
PLEASE....
- be positive
- remember this is someone’s child…treat them as you would want your own child treated
- provide feedback to the Referee in Chief
- read the rules of basketball. Even if you played, have coached for years. It is a good idea to refresh your memory!
- don’t ask our referees to be gym captains or convenors
- praise our referees when they have done a good job
- take your issues to a trainer on-site and deal with them in a calm manner
We ask that you do NOT take up your concerns directly with the referee.
There are numerous reasons for this, but the most important is that many of our young people are working hard at what they are doing, and while intimidation may not be your motive, they may feel intimidated anyway. Sometimes it is best to give yourself some time after a game, take a step back and decide whether it truly is a concern worth the time and attention of both the convenor and the Referee in Chief.
To be announced in September. Please stay tuned!

Who coaches in Spring League?
There are no "official" coaches in SPRING LEAGUE , unless we have a volunteer step forward and ask to be the coach. In the past, a parent volunteer has always stepped forward to roster the players through and ensure that everyone has played equally. It does not have to be the same parent every game ...anyone can do this. (ie. There are roster sheets at the scorers table that tell you exactly "who" plays "when"...so there is NO pressure on the coach" to have to make a decision ...He just calls out the player's name and that player goes on the next shift!)
- If the "coach of the day" happens to know anything about basketball, he/she sometimes calls timeouts to give the players some "hints"...but nothing formal. The idea of Spring League is to make this as "stress free" as possible. This is purely "recreational" basketball ...one step up from "street" ball (because there are refs who will be calling fouls and violations) but it's whole purpose is to have the opportunity to PLAY more basketball ...just for the FUN of it and NOT to be instructed in the finer points ...this is NOT a basketball skills camp...just a series of fun rec games!
-
Weekday games, anyway to determine on which day they will be play?
We cannot guarantee that all weekday games will be played on just one day (ie. only Tuesdays or only Wednesdays) but the majority of games, within one division, are played on one day or the other. To be entirely safe though ...players must be prepared to play on both days thro the week or plan to miss a game or two (last season this only involved one team switching nights once in the schedule!)
-
How many players on a team?
There are a maximum of 11 players per team and a minimum of 7.
-
Can friends request to play together?
YES ...the whole philosophy is to have FUN playing basketball ...and if playing with friends makes it more fun ...then we say - Lets do it! On average we have requests for 3-4 players to play together and this we can easily accommodate. If any team balancing is required we just move the "blocks" of players and NOT just the 1 strong player or the 1 weak one. Requests for more than 6 players on one team MAY result in some team balancing issues and we ask for your understanding should we have to split large groups of players into 2 teams....and please understand that ...as this is a recreational league...we reserve the right to rebalance teams on site, in any game (at half time) if the score is a blow out. So players will start out on their assigned team ..but if rebalancing is required then some players may be switched to the opposing team for the second half of the game.
This way all players assigned to one team can car pool as they will be going to the same game but they may be switching teams at halftime.
-
How do they balance Spring League teams?
The first 2 games of the season are "exhibition" so that we can gauge the relative strengths or weaknesses of the teams ...If things are hugely out of whack, then we try and make adjustments at this point. In the beginning, players only receive a 2 game schedule. After the 2nd game (and any adjustments to the teams have been made) they receive the schedule for the balance of the season. Since there are no standings recorded, and no championship at the end ...just 12 games of officiated basketball ...there is not usually a major balance problem.
-
Are jerseys provided?
Yes ...jerseys are provided if you do not own one ie. current GCBA HL players can use their own HL jerseys to receive a $25 registration credit on their GCBA account, or borrow one from the GCBA for the Spring League season, and return it at the end of SL to receive their $25 shirt deposit registration credit on their player account.
