Mike O’Connor Memorial Girls’ Tournament

The Mike O’Connor Memorial Girls’ Tournament, now in its 26th year, is named in the memory of Mike O’Connor. Mike began coaching in 1980, became one of the principal organizers of the girls’ house league program in 1985, and initiated the Wolverines girls’ competitive program.Tragically, in 1995, Mike was killed in a car accident on highway 16 on his way home from an educational conference three weeks after winning a “AA” Minor Bantam Provincial Championship in Toronto.

Mike was described as a positive and patient coach who believed in giving his players a chance to grow and develop skills. He strongly believed that young GCBA athletes could not only have fun, but also develop long lasting friendships and good sportsmanship through basketball.

This annual tournament is sanctioned by the Ontario Basketball Association and is regarded as a premier event in the basketball community. It continues to contribute to the enjoyment of the game and proceeds support GCBA Benevolent Funding.
