Club History
More About Our Club History…
The GCBA is the longest running and largest volunteer-run basketball club in Eastern Ontario. Governed by an executive committee of 6 elected officers and an appointed Executive Director, and in accordance with its club Constitution, GCBA executive committee members are responsible for all operations.
The GCBA offers a variety of basketball programs year-round, available to both boys and girls. The combined registration for all GCBA programs is approximately 1500+ participants annually, with the fall/winter House League and Competitive programs regularly registering between 600-1000+ players.
The recreational house league focuses on basic skills development, while the competitive development program stresses advanced team play. The fall/winter House League & Competitive seasons operate for 18-20 weeks from September through March and run, on average, 80+ games every Saturday and Sunday at 11 different gym locations in Orleans & Ottawa East.
Of note, the GCBA sponsors 3 longstanding and well-respected competitive tournaments each year: the Mike O’ Connor Memorial Tournament (for girls), and the Mike Suys Invitational Tournaments (for boys) every February/March, featuring 180+ teams from across the province of Ontario, Quebec, and upper New York State. GCBA also acts as a host club for Ontario Basketball Championships (at different levels) every April-May.
In addition, the GCBA sponsors 3 affiliated Basketball programs for youth:
- a Jr. NBA Program (80 players), which offers an NBA-designed basketball skills curriculum for boys and girls aged 5-7;
- a recreational spring league (for 240 players aged 9-16), with a 12 game schedule of recreational basketball over a 6-week period each April and May; and,
- a summer program including Competitive Training Sessions, 3 on 3 “drop in” sessions, a FREE Basketball in the Park program for girls 8-11, as well as a one week Summer camp (also just for girls?).
Finally, the GCBA also offers a junior referee development program, as well as special coach and player clinics.
