we are dedicated to developing basketball skills in kids and youth
who we are
The Gloucester-Cumberland Basketball Association (GCBA) is an incorporated, registered non-profit recreational sports association and registered affiliated member of Ontario Basketball which offers children, between the ages of 5 and 19 years of age, opportunities to participate and enjoy the game of basketball in a community setting. We have been operating in the Orleans area since 1981 and operate with the assistance of over 200 community volunteers.
The GCBA is governed by an executive committee of 6 elected officers and an appointed Executive Director as required by its constitution. The executive members are responsible for all GCBA operations.
At the present time, the GCBA sponsors several different basketball programs, available to both male and female athletes, including: recreational house leagues (focusing on basic skills development), a competitive development program (stressing advanced team play), a junior referees development program, a recreational (games only) Spring League, and Tykes (age 5-7) program focusing on the introduction to basketballs skills.
Prior to 1991, the house league program was comprised of co-ed teams of both boys and girls together on teams. In 1991, the girls Wolverine program (competitive division) was established and in 1993 a separate girl’s house league was organized to allow more girls an opportunity to play basketball.
Our registration for the regular house league and competitive programs is regularly between 600-900 players. In addition to our Regular House League and Competitive Programs, the GCBA sponsors 3 affiliated Basketball programs for youth. A Jr. NBA Program (80 players) which offers an NBA designed basketball skills curriculum for boys and girls aged 5-7 and also, a Recreational SPRING LEAGUE program (for 240 players aged 9-16) which offers a 12 game schedule of recreational basketball over a 6-week period each April and May.
During our regular house league season, which operates for 18-20 weeks from September to March, we run an average of 62 games every Saturday and Sunday at 11 different gym sites in the former cities of Gloucester and Cumberland. In addition we sponsor 5-6 competitive tournaments every spring featuring 178 teams from across the province of Ontario and beyond our borders from Quebec and upper New York State.
